CHILD SAFETY SEATS
ALWAYS PUT YOUR INFANT IN AN APPROVED CAR SAFETY SEAT IN THE BACK SEAT OF YOUR CAR BEFORE DRIVING ANYWHERE.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A CAR SAFETY SEAT:
- Use infant-only car safety seats with 3 or 5 point harness systems. This makes for the best comfort, fit and positioning for the infant and premature infant.
- Car seats made for use by infants who weigh more than 20 pounds should not be used for premature infants.
- Do not use car seats with hard plastic chest covers or trays.
BRING THE CAR SEAT TO THE HOSPITAL:
- Make sure you know how to use your car seat and you know how to put the infant into the car seat.
- The car seat should be clean and working right. Never use a car seat that has been in an accident
- If using a used car seat, make sure all parts are working right.
TIPS ON PUTTING YOUR INFANT IN THE CAR SEAT:
- Place infant blankets rolled up beside the infant's 'body and head to help prevent too much side-to-side moving.
- Put the' shoulder straps through the lowest slots of the car seat.
- This may depend on the size of your baby.
- The straps should be snug and the seat's clip should rest at the center of the infant's chest, not the neck or stomach,
- Make sure the infant's hips and back are flat against the back of the seat. These things can help prevent the infant from slouching oven
- A small diaper or blanket may be put between the infant's legs.
SAFETY TIPS:
- NEVER hold an infant or toddler in your arms in the car or buckle the seat belt around both of you,
- NEVER put your infant in the front seat of a car that has a working air bag.
- NEVER leave your infant alone' in the car even 'if he or she is asleep.
